Outlander's Brianna apologises to co-star for mistake that led to hours-long hunt

Outlander’s Catriona Balfe discusses parenting during filming

Outlander’s Brianna actress Sophie Skelton has apologised to her co-star after a pointless hunt for a beloved item which took them hours around Scotland.

Sophie Skelton has been portraying the daughter of Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) since the second series, going on to start her own love story with Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin).

It hasn’t always gone according to plan though on set when the cameras were turned off as the 30-year-old had issues with her jewellery on not one but two occasions.

Opening up at The Land Con in Paris to a live Q&A panel, she said: “So there was a season, I think it’s where Brianna’s out shooting with Roger - this has also happened with Richard [Rankin] and me - and I went to the trailer and I went to the toilet and when I came back we were going to shoot.

“We were doing close-ups on us with the gun and I realised Brianna’s wedding ring had gone and so we’re searching around the field for it on set and I said to my wardrobe I’m like ‘Where’s the ring? I don’t know what to do, we don’t have another ring, it’s gone.’

“I searched the trailer, I searched everywhere and then like an hour later, I realised that when I tucked my shirt back into my trousers, the ring had gone into my pants and was buried in my socks.”

But a similar incident took place again in “real life” with a personal item of Skelton’s.

She continued: “So the real life version is that my mum gave me her dad’s - who I never met - wedding ring and so I had that on and Richard and I were at, what castle?”

Rankin replied: “It’s a castle on the banks of the Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle.”

“We were doing some Brianna and Richard research, trying to get into the heads of the characters, given that they’re historians and ‘oh we’ll visit everywhere.’, she explained.

“It was absolutely chucking it down with rain and we got into the car and I realised this ring has gone. I was like ‘this is so important to me, like we’ve got to go back.’ I called the hotel where I’ve been staying, we went back to a shop that we’ve been, asking them, gave everyone the number -”

Rankin then interjected, stating that they had “backtracked all the way up basically and then back down” before searching in the grass around the castle.

He teased: “Literally every f*****g blade of grass, every blade of grass, then we went back and we researched and we’re like maybe the grass is in a different position, let’s look again.”

Skelton laughed: “It was soaking and then we got into the car and I was kind of upset and I tried to scratch my leg and I was like ‘Oh yes’.”

Rankin said this was after another “couple of hundred miles” before she added: “I was like ‘Oh Richard’ and started giggling and he’s like ‘What, don’t tell me’ and I was like ‘it’s been in my sock’ hours later.

“He was just there with a hat on that he had gotten ruined in the rain as well, like a cowboy hat... I was just like ‘I’m really sorry”.

Outlander is available to watch on Starz and MGM+ via Prime Video Channels.
