Netflix has a Virgin River prequel in the works but what is there to know so far about the spin-off?

Season six of Virgin River is in the works with the romantic drama now in production after initially being delayed last year by the actors and writers’ strikes.

The streamer’s CEO Ted Sarandos also confirmed that the latest outing would be returning sooner than expected, debuting at the end of this year rather than in 2025.

But there’s even more good news for Netflix subscribers as it’s been revealed that the Virgin River universe will be expanding with a prequel series now in development. So what do we know so far?

Season five saw Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) finally come face-to-face with her biological dad Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson) after coming across her mum’s old love letters.

The Virgin River prequel is believed to be about Mel’s late mum Sarah’s love story with Everett who she met in a “picturesque Northern Californian town”.

It has been reported that the upcoming sixth series is going to provide a glimpse into their past with flashbacks of a young Sarah and Everett.

These past moments will act almost as a backdoor pilot to the spin-off with the new series written and developed by Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith.

Deadline has reported that casting for the actors to play the key characters as guest stars in season six is currently underway.

This won’t be the first time that a prequel has come from a hit Netflix drama.

The streamer went down a similar route with Bridgerton, expanding its universe with its prequel Queen Charlotte which became one of Netflix’s most watched series.

With the Virgin River prequel still in development, it is too early to speculate its release date.
