Newly crowned Olympic golf champion Scottie Scheffler will cherish his gold medal from Paris 2024, despite not receiving the usual hefty prize money he's accustomed to. In a stunning final round on Sunday, the world's top-ranked golfer scored nine birdies and finished 19-under-par, securing gold for Team USA.

The 28-year-old started the day four shots behind but managed a bogey-free round of 62, edging out Team GB's silver medallist Tommy Fleetwood by just one stroke. This adds to Scheffler's impressive tally in 2024, having triumphed in seven of the 17 events he's participated in so far.

Besides the gold medal, the Olympic champion is awarded 50 world ranking points and guaranteed entry into the next four majors - though as reigning Masters champion, Scheffler had already secured his spot. However, the absence of a substantial cash prize at the Paris Olympics means Scheffler couldn't boost his record-breaking earnings. The International Golf Federation, which governs the event, made the decision not to award monetary prizes to Olympic medallists.

The rules vary across all Olympic sports, with World Athletics set to award £39k ($50k) to Noah Lyles following his victory in the 100m final on Sunday. Nonetheless, this doesn't stop athletes from receiving rewards from their respective Olympic committees.

Scheffler is at least set to pocket a tidy sum of £29.7k ($38k) from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee as a gold medalist. Meanwhile, Hong Kong tops the rewards list with their Olympic champions reportedly banking £601.9k ($768k).

For golf sensation Scheffler, the Olympics prize money pales in comparison to his PGA Tour windfalls. He set a new PGA record with an eye-watering £22million ($28.1million) in winnings over 16 events this year, including almost £13million ($17million) from his seven signature event displays.

While Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau have clinched three of the four major titles in 2024, Scheffler is in an unbelievable vein of form, with seven event wins under his belt: Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship, Masters Tournament, RBC Heritage, Memorial Tournament, Travelers Championship, and the 2024 Olympics. His stellar year, combined with the rest of his career winnings, has placed him seventh on the PGA's all-time earners list, banking a cool £55.4million ($70.7million).

Scheffler, who was overcome with emotion on the podium at Le Golf National, reflected on the final round that won him Olympic gold: "The guys in front of me were playing really well. I knew I was gonna have to do something special coming in and, you know, I was fortunate to make some birdies," he said.

"It's tough to compare accomplishments, but an Olympic gold medal is definitely going to be one of my special memories when I look back on my career. This was a fun week and it was great representing the USA, and I'm proud to be going home with a medal."
