Chris McCausland's two-word reason why he hasn't seen Strictly leaves ITV hosts speechless

Strictly: Chris McCausland announced as 2024 contestant

This Morning fans were in hysterics at comedian Chris McCausland as he shared that he had never watched BBC's Strictly Come Dancing - despite being the first face confirmed in the 2024 celebrity line up.

The Have I Got News For You and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown star was unveiled on ITV's This Morning as hosts Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle quizzed him about why he decided to sign up. The 47-year-old joked he has “never watched” Strictly, saying that there's "no point" when you're blind.

He added: "This is literally the worst-kept secret there has ever been in British television. I think it’s been out there – it’s been exhausting keeping a secret everyone seems to know.”

Asked how he feels about taking part, he said: “Apprehensive, massively apprehensive. I don’t know what I’m getting myself into. I’ve never watched it, obviously. It’s just some music.

"I don’t dance, I have never danced. I grew up with headbanging and mosh pits."

Fans on Twitter pointed out Josie's mistake when she asked him about watching the programme, thinking the interaction was hilarious.

One user wrote: "@thismorning Josie asking comedian Chris McCausland why he is going on Strictly when he’s never seen the programme. His response 'No point watching a dance show when you’re blind'. Silly Josie [crying laughing emojis]."

But not everyone was impressed, as another sarcastically wrote: "@thismorning From the Josie Gibson school of interviewing techniques, speaking to Chris McCausland about being on Strictly, 'what made you sign up for it, you’ve never seen it?' He’s blind!"

Chris will be the first blind contestant to compete on the BBC show, following in the footsteps of the show's first deaf contestant Rose Ayling-Ellis, who won Strictly's coveted glitterball trophy back in 2021.

The Liverpool-born actor and comedian lost his sight in his early 20s due to retinitis pigmentosa - a hereditary eye disease, which causes gradual degeneration of the retina.

His failing vision inspired him to turn his career towards comedy, performing his first stand-up gig in 2003.

Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One later this year.
