Game of Thrones fans in meltdown as iconic book characters debut in upcoming spin-off

The Last Of Us season two teased in HBO promo

Game of Thrones fans were overjoyed to see the latest thrilling spin-off teased in a new trailer for HBO’s upcoming shows.

Amongst a sensational sizzle reel, which also included new sneak peeks at The Penguin, The White Lotus season three and The Last of Us season two, the teaser revealed the first footage for the next Westeros saga.

Set 100 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years before Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows two iconic characters from author George RR Martin’s books.

Based on his novella Tales of Dunk and Egg, the upcoming prequel follows ‘Dunk’, Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and ‘Egg’, Duncan’s squire Aegon Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell).

The trailer shared some short snippets from the series, giving fans their first proper look at the characters ahead of their TV debut next year.

An official synopsis confirms the series is “set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.”

It continues, “great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Fans were thrilled to finally get a solid update on the Westeros prequel after the spin-off was first announced back in 2021.

On Reddit, someone said: “The wait for season 3 [of House of the Dragon] is gonna be real long, but at least Dunk the Hunk and Egg will be there to entertain us.”

“This is going to be quite exciting and a lot of fun,” another said.

While another questioned the show’s apparently more light-hearted tone, asking: “Is this supposed to be a comedy set in the same universe as HotD?

“If so, that's a wild direction and I kinda love it, since I don't think any franchise has had dramatically different genres in the same universe.”

To which another fan explained: “Its based off novellas GRRM wrote and yeah, its not a comedy but its much more light hearted and fun. Knight and squire travel Westeros and get into weird situations.”

Over on X (formerly Twitter), one die-hard Thrones fan was certain the franchise will remain head-and-shoulders above other fantasy series.

“With the complete disaster that was Rings of Power, Wheel of Time, and the Witcher, it is clear that ASOIAF will be the most powerful fantasy franchise for the next twenty years, minimum,” they said.

And another wrote: “I'm super excited for this one. I love this time period of Westerosi History, because the Targaryens have no dragons and the kingdoms are in relative peace. Shows a different side of Westeros than the war we are used to.”

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are available to stream on Sky Go and NOW.
