Mason Greenwood has made his stance clear on representing Jamaica on the international stage previously by snubbing an approach by the nation.

The forward left Manchester United earlier this summer to join Marseille on a permanent transfer worth £27million. The Red Devils have also inserted a 50 per cent sell-on clause into the deal.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe after it became clear that he did not have a future at Old Trafford. Charges of rape and assault against him were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service last year, but a decision was made to part ways with the academy graduate rather than reintegrate him into the squad.

The Sun reported previously that Greenwood will not be selected for England football team in the future, especially under the management of ex-boss Gareth Southgate. As a result, it was speculated that he could switch his allegiance and represent Jamaica as he is eligible to do so on his mother’s side.

Greenwood snubbed the approach from Jamaica and is insistent on resurrecting his career with the Three Lions, in what will be unwelcome news to Steve McClaren, who has recently left United to become the manager of the North American outfit.

The ex-England boss will be hoping to breathe a new lease of life into the country on the international stage, and convincing Greenwood to join him there would have been a major step in the right direction.

Speaking after it was announced that he had been named the Jamaica manager, McClaren explained: “I am extremely proud and excited to take up the position of head coach for the Jamaica men's national team. I had no hesitation in accepting a position that is ideally suited to me at this stage of my career

“Prior to returning to Manchester United for a second spell, I spent time at FIFA as a technical advisor on their Global Exo Analysis project. Jamaica was one of the team teams I worked with and I quickly came to realise the potential the country possessed.

“In the years since, that potential has grown significantly and there is every reason to believe that with continued hard work and development a bright future lies ahead.”

Greenwood has made fewer than three competitive appearances for England and not featured at a FIFA World Cup match, meaning that he would be able to make the switch further down the line if he recognises that his future with the Three Lions is as bleak as speculated.
