Netflix has finally unveiled the release date for the eagerly awaited second season of Squid Game. The first season holds the record as Netflix's most-watched series ever, racking up over 1.65 billion viewing hours within the first 28 days of its launch.

The announcement of a second season came shortly after the initial release, and fans have been on tenterhooks for any new trailers, images, plot details, and of course, the release date. Netflix has now confirmed that Squid Game season two will be launched on December 26, with Seong Gi-hun set to pursue the creators of the lethal game.

A third and final season is also slated for release in 2025. Here's what we know so far about Squid Game season 2.

When does Squid Game season 2 premiere?

Season 2 will be available in its entirety on Netflix from December 26, 2024. The premiere date and the announcement of the final season were revealed via a trailer which you can watch above.

Series director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the news in a letter to fans. "I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season," he penned.

"The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man's] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year."

Who is in the cast of Squid Game season 2?

Lee Jung-jae is set to return as the determined Seong Gi-hun, alongside Lee Byung-hun's enigmatic Front Man and Wi Ha-joon as the persevering detective Hwang Jun-ho in Squid Game's second season. Fan favourite Gong Yoo is confirmed to reprise his role from the first season.

Newcomers joining the intense world of Squid Game include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an, together creating an expanded roster of intriguing characters.

Netflix released a chilling teaser trailer on Thursday (August 1). The trailer sharply focuses on faceless sprinters, clad in Squid Game's signature green tracksuits, racing along a track.

In a dark twist, competitors begin collapsing amidst the race. We then witness the sinister masked workers accompanied by Front Man, who chillingly announces: "It's been three years. Do you want to play again?".

What can we expect from the plot of Squid Game season 2?

Netflix tantalizes fans with a plot teaser that hints at high stakes: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport."

"Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."

The new season will hope to build on the success of its first season. The series received 14 Emmy nominations with six wins which included a win for Hwang Dong-hyuk for best director for a drama series, one for Lee Jung-jae for best actor in a drama series, and another for Jung Ho-yeon for best actress in a drama series.
