New “bloodier” and “more epic” versions of Zack Synder’s Rebel Moon films will be released on Netflix later this week. Coined as the 300 director’s answer to Star Wars, the intergalactic epic sees an age-old battle between a power-hungry military force known as the Motherworld and a group of rogue Imperium soldiers hoping to topple them.

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire was first released on Netflix on December 15, 2023 and its sequel, Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver was released on April 19.

The films received some negative reviews from critics but attracted some loyal fans who have been calling for more Rebel Moon films and material.

Zack Synder has delivered with two new director cuts of each film with new names - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. Both will be released exclusively on Netflix and promise new characters, action and R rated scenes.

What time will Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut be released on Netflix?

Both Rebel Moon Part One: Director’s Cut and Rebel Moon Part Two: Director’s Cut will begin streaming on Netflix on Friday, August 2.

Netflix typically releases original TV shows and movies at 12am local time, so for UK audiences, they can view the films at midnight on Friday.

For US viewers, both parts will be released at 12am Pacific Time, or 3am Eastern Time on the morning of Friday, August 2.

How long will the new director's cuts be?

The first two films—which were both rated PG-13—were two hours and 16 minutes, and two hours and three minutes, respectively. The combined runtime for the R-rated Rebel Moon‘s director’s cut is at more than six hours.

Why has Zack Synder released a new extended version of Rebel Moon?

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Snyder revealed that Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood originally held a NC-17 rating due to several violent scenes. Synder was content with the NC-17 rating, but Netflix reminded him of their original deal, which was for the director's cuts to be rated R.

He said: There were a couple cuts I had to make to (an Ed Skrein) sequence to get it to the R rating from the NC-17. Because it was NC-17 for quite a while, and then we had to really (…) A few less whacks (to the head), a little less brains that he dug out.

“(That version is) somewhere.

“But no – I did have a conversation with Netflix about whether or not that was a possibility. And they were like, ‘We really want it to be R.’ And I was like, ‘All right. That's fair. I did say I would give you an R-rated cut.’ (…)

“I asked Netflix if they were cool with the NC-17, and they were like, ‘No, we're not cool.’ Because I had agreed, Debbie (Snyder) was like, ‘You did agree that it would be R-rated.’ “And I said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. A deal's a deal.’”

Rebel Moon boasts an immense ensemble cast led by Sofia Boutella as Kora. The Algerian actress is best-known as the pale-faced Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond and as the titular Mummy in Tom Cruise’s 2017 action flop.

She stars alongside Game of Thrones’ Michiel Huisman as Gunnar and Deadpool villain Ed Skrein as ruthless Admiral Noble. Ray Fisher – who previously starred in Snyder’s Justice League as the robotic superhero Cyborg – stars as Darrian Bloodaxe while Infinity Pool’s Cleopatra Coleman plays his sister Devra.

The film’s scrappy group of warriors is made up of Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam as Kai, Blood Diamond’s Djimon Hounsou as Titus, Sense8’s Doona Bae as Nemesis, Supergirl’s Staz Nair as Tarak and newcomer E. Duffy as Milius. Rounding out the cast is Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins, who lends his voice to Jimmy, a mechanised knight who joins Kora’s quest.
