ITV Vera fans fume after 'warning' issued minutes before episode airs

Vera: DS Joe Ashworth joins Vera in her garden

Vera viewers have lashed out at ITV for issuing an 'unnecessary warning' ahead of a rerun of an old episode on Monday night. It's been a few months since the announcement that the hit show will conclude in 2025.

The final series of Vera will comprise just two feature-length episodes. The filming of the much-loved ITV show will be wrapping up earlier this month.

Filming locations spanned across the North East, from Blyth to Glanton and Hartlepool to South Shields. As fans eagerly await the release date for series 14, Vera has made a surprise comeback to ITV, with a rerun occupying the 9pm slot on Monday and Tuesday.

Alongside confusion over ITV's decision to air the fifth episode of series 11 instead of the first, there was also online backlash regarding the warning issued before the programme began.

Before the opening credits, an announcer warned viewers: "And now, containing crime scenes from the start that some people may find upsetting."

But the statement didn't sit well with some viewers especially as Vera was airing after the 9pm watershed instead of its usual 8pm Sunday slot.

One disgruntled viewer took to social media to vent and wrote: "WTF is going on @ITV so @VeraSeries is about to come on, it's 9pm. And now, containing crime scenes from the start that some people may find upsetting. Vera? Really? Get a f**king grip! Don't get me wrong, Vera is a ledge, but unclutch those pearls a Bit ITV FFS!" (sic)

Another frustrated fan agreed, commenting: "Thought the watershed was 9. Are adults really that pathetic these days that we need warnings for crime shows?"

Back in April, actress Brenda Blethyn, who plays Vera, announced to fans that she would be stepping down from the much-loved role.

In a statement, she said: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I'm sad to be saying Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years.

"I'll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role.

"The Producers, dream cast, and crew have been fabulous and I’m going to miss them, but I won’t forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the northeast and our fans worldwide. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Vera is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
