Manchester United’s new £59million signing Leny Yoro is set to be ruled out of the start of the 2024/25 season with a foot injury. The 18-year-old, who arrived from Lille this month, was forced off during United’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles last Saturday.

The centre-back was forced off before half-time, and was already ruled out of the games with Real Betis in San Diego on Wednesday, before a clash with Liverpool in North Carolina on Saturday.

And tellingly, he's now been seen using crutches and wearing a protective plastic boot at the club's training base in Los Angeles.

Video footage posted on social media showed the French under-21 international joining his team-mates in boarding the team bus to training. But he appeared to be moving gingerly on his crutches, and now looks to be a major doubt for United's opening Premier League game at home to Fulham on August 16.

Prior to that, the FA Cup winners take on Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 9. And Erik Ten Hag now faces the prospect of starting the campaign without both Yoro and Lisandro Martinez, who is yet to rejoin the squad following the Copa America.

In the immediate aftermath of the Arsenal game, the Dutch manager had sounded caution over his new signing. "It is too short notice," he told MUTV. "We have to wait over 24 hours and then we know hopefully more.

"We were very careful, especially with Leny. He did only 50 per cent from the sessions so it was very disappointing that he had to come off but let's be positive and see what is coming out."

Yoro was a much hailed arrival at the club, having also been tracked by Liverpool and Real Madrid. And he made his debut in the friendly with Rangers on July 20, playing 45 minutes as United prevailed 2-0 in Edinburgh.

United have been linked with further defensive reinforcements this summer, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt both touted for moves. Harry Maguire meanwhile, has recovered from the calf injury that kept him out of Euro 2024.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund was also forced off against Arsenal, but is reportedly back in training. And it's not the first time a US summer tour has caused an injury headache for Ten Hag.

Last year, Kobbie Mainoo suffered an ankle injury that ruled the midfielder out for four months. He ended up making his Premier League debut as late as November, but soon became an established first team performer.
