Channel 4 announces A Place In The Sun news after huge cuts

A Place in the Sun house hunters say 'it's been a struggle'

Channel 4 has unveiled its plans for a popular daytime TV staple amidst a series of budget cuts. The long-standing programme, A Place In The Sun, which pairs prospective buyers with property experts to find their ideal home abroad, has been gracing our screens since 2002.

Despite financial constraints, Channel 4 has greenlit a new instalment of the spin-off series, A Place In The Sun: What Happened Next.

It will feature presenters like Jasmine Harman and Laura Hamilton as they revisit individuals they've previously helped to move abroad. They'll be catching up with past house hunters to see how their international property ventures have fared, according to The Sun.

Daytime commissioner Jo Street commented on the show's impact: "A Place in the Sun is such a beloved show, and we know the audience really cares what happens to the house-hunters once the cameras leave. What a treat to catch up and see what happened when that offer was finally accepted."

For two decades, A Place In The Sun has captivated audiences, with a recent episode showcasing a couple who had to abandon their quest for the perfect holiday home, reports the Mirror.

Jasmine ventured to the Canary Islands aiming to assist retired architect Nick and ex-journalist Tim in locating their dream abode. However, Jasmine informed viewers that this search was one of her "trickiest" to date.

The reveal of the spin-off comes amidst cutbacks at Channel 4, with previously axed programmes including Danny Dyer's Scared Of The Dark and The Andrew Neil Show. The broadcaster, taking drastic steps, shut down five of its standard channels by the end of June, aligning with an ambitious five-year blueprint targeting a digital transition to become "digital-first" by the year 2030.

Music fans bid farewell to The Box music channels at June's close, while More4, E4 Extra, and 4Seven were left teetering on the edge. In a statement to The Sun, a spokesperson for Channel 4 corroborated this strategy shift: "As we announced earlier this year as part of Channel 4's digital-first Fast Forward strategy, we will be closing our Box network of channels from 1 July across all platforms - as they are no longer of sufficient scale to deliver meaningful return on investment."

The spokesperson elaborated on the channel's reshaping, "Our strategy reflects the generational shift in TV viewing and involves reducing costs particularly in linear activities - to allow us to invest in digital priorities and stay competitive in a world of global entertainment conglomerates and social media giants."

A Place In The Sun airs on Channel 4 weekdays at 3pm
