Macau climbs to 32nd spot in latest Henley Passport Index

Macau has seen steady gains in global passport power according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The special administrative region jumped to 32nd place with a visa-free access score of 143, up significantly from 40th place in 2016.

The Henley Passport Index, compiled by Henley & Partners using International Civil Aviation Organization data, considers 199 passports and 227 destinations. Singapore captured the top spot for the first time with a record high visa-free score of 195. Trailing closely were Western European nations like France and Germany along with Japan.

Among regional neighbors, Hong Kong placed 18th with a score of 170. Taiwan dropped to 33rd position, granting access to 141 countries – four fewer than last year. Meanwhile, mainland China has been steadily ascending the rankings, climbing five spots from last year to attain the 59th position in 2024. While China still lags behind at number 59th, it continues to narrow the gap as its passport access grows.

For Macau passport holders, the gains have translated into easier travel. They can now enter 143 countries visa-free or with visas on arrival. An additional 25 countries offer e-visas. The territory also saw Georgia begin waiving visas for Macau residents last year.
