OpenAI Has Built a Search Engine Prototype, SearchGPT

For many users, ChatGPT is already their go-to tool for answering questions. OpenAI has taken things a step further with SearchGPT, its new search engine prototype.

Available to just a small group of users and publishers for the time being, the company describes the tool as “designed to combine the strength of our AI models with information from the web to give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.”

A box at the top of SearchGPT asks, “What are you looking for?” After inputting the question, users will receive answers that solely cite from sources deemed reputable, such as newspapers and research articles.

Each response names and links the source, allowing the user to reach the article in full. OpenAI says that it partnered with publishers to create SearchGPT and is allowing the publishers themselves to manage how they appear in the feature.

While the search engine is separate from OpenAI’s methods for training AI models – the company has been criticized for reportedly using content without publishers’ permission – all websites can show up in search results regardless of whether they opted in.
