Coronation Street teases unique episode from Paul’s perspective

Emotions were at an all-time high on Friday’s instalment of Coronation Street as the powerful episode allowed viewers to witness life through Paul Foreman’s (Played by Peter Ash) perspective.

Last year, the fan-favourite was diagnosed with MND, with his symptoms progressively getting worse over the past few months. As there is currently no cure for the disease, ITV viewers will eventually see Paul die in the soap.

However, before his speech had deteriorated, Paul asked his husband Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to help him end his life when the time came. During Friday’s episode, Paul played their wedding song while alone in their home, which was a signal to Billy that he wanted to end his life.

Although his husband was clearly blindsided and tried to change his mind, Billy finally accepted Paul’s wishes and started to prepare the drugs. Sobbing to Paul telling him how much he loved him, they were interrupted by Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) who told them Carys had fallen down the stairs and asked if they could look after the other children.

Agreeing, his nieces and nephews arrived and stayed the night with Paul telling Billy the next morning that he wasn’t planning on dying just yet.

As the heartbreaking storyline continues to unfold, viewers are aware Billy will eventually be involved in ending Paul’s life.

Although many believe Billy may find himself in trouble with the authorities should he help Paul end his life, as assisted euthanasia is currently a criminal offence in the United Kingdom.

One person online commented: “On Friday’s episode Billy was literally minutes away from granting Paul’s dying wish. But I kept thinking about how Billy would likely go to prison. (Which will be another boring trial) I know they discussed it but I can’t remember what he said.”

Replying, another fan added: “I think Paul will die naturally so it won't come to that. However, I do think Billy will turn to prescribed drugs again.”

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “I don’t know how Billy is going to retain his job after this, given he could even go to prison. But I admire him for doing it for the one he loves.”

Another questioned: “Why is no one considering that Billy could go to prison for helping Paul? Not even mentioned.”

“The best thing about Paul’s storyline is the thought that if Billy helps him die he could face up to 14 years in prison.” quipped someone else.

Speaking about the highly emotional episode, actor Peter Ash said: “I feel incredibly proud to have worked on this episode.

“From the moment I read the script I knew it was going to be something really special (mostly because I couldn't stop crying!) I loved being able to record Paul's inner thoughts, showing us the mind is still 100%, even with MND.

“I hope the audience enjoys it, as everyone involved gave their all!”

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
