PGA Tour star snaps and tosses equipment before sinking a hole-in-one

Hayden Buckley won’t forget his second round at the 3M Open in a hurry following two holes that included the sublime and the ridiculous. The 28-year-old ended up missing the cut in Minnesota after finishing five over par, but only after racking up a hole-in-one on the 17th.

His third career ace was made even more remarkable by the fact he’d suffered a horror show minutes earlier, hurling equipment to the ground in frustration.

On the par-four 16th, the 28-year-old shanked his drive to the right, with the rough saving his ball from flying into the water.

His attempt at recovering the situation went wrong, with Buckley firing his second shot straight at a red penalty area marker just yards in front of him. The ball duly took a wicked deflection into the lake, with the player reacting furiously.

Buckley duly picked up the marker and hurled it down into the ground. The American eventually made a damaging double bogey, essentially ending his hopes of still being in the tournament over the weekend.

But his spirits were certainly lifted at the 178 yard par-three 17th. Rather than capitulate after his nightmare, Buckley responded by holing his tee shot to huge cheers of the crowd.

Buckley, who also missed the cut at the recent US Open, later tried to explain the tantrum that preceded his magic moment, admitting he didn’t even want to play the 17th after his double bogey. "Ironically, my caddie asked me if that red stake was in the way,” he said.

“I said there's no chance it's in the way, it was a good 10 feet left of my ball. I think it kind of came out low and left and hit the stake. At that point I was like, all right, I think I'm ready to book a flight out of here.

“But yeah, we waited for about 20 minutes on the next tee box. It's never fun waiting when you're playing awful. I think weird things happen in this game. It gave me a little bit of something to smile at at least headed home."

Remarkably, it’s the second time that the world No.71 has missed a cut on the PGA Tour after nailing a hole-in-one. He previously did the same at the Players Championship, and the irony wasn’t lost on him.

"Obviously Sawgrass I had the hole-in-one there as well and missed the cut," he recalled. "I need to figure out this hole-in-one and make cut thing."
