Letter: In Russia, Donald Trump is a favorite weapon against America

Russia and Putin’s use of Donald Trump is acquiring more and more political space in Russian publications. In their propaganda shaping opinions of their own people, Donald Trump is a favorite weapon against America.

Trump is described as a friend and ally, “our Trumpushka” and “Donald Fredovych.” Basically, he is described as Russia’s great hope. They proclaim that Trump is “sorely missed” and that Russia is “ready to help elect you again.” Russia propagandists rejoiced at Trump’s coup attempt when he lost in 2020 because they thought that this could lead to a civil war in the United States. In addition, such coups, beginning with the very founding of the Soviet Union in 1917, are a time-honored Russian way to effect change.

Their coverage of Trump’s behavior was at first highly positive. However, when the coup failed, a very awkward pivot was made to the position that the coup was not Trump-inspired but that it all had been some sort of provocation by the Democrats.

And now, while suspecting perhaps that Trump is a fool, they continue to promote Trump. And why not when Trump recently told a crowd at a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, “Putin’s smart. I mean, he’s taking over a country for two dollars’ worth of sanctions … I’d say that’s pretty smart. He’s taking over a country – really a vast, vast location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in.”

And all of this of course coincides with Russia’s primary goal which is to eliminate the United States as a world power by using a former and perhaps future American president who follows and supports their talking points.
