Chief Executive John Lee on Sunday congratulated épée fencer Vivian Kong for securing Hong Kong's first Paris Olympics gold medal. The homegrown heroine made a thrilling comeback victory in the women's épée final, becoming the third Hongkonger in history to grasp an Olympic gold medal. In a statement, Lee said Kong has brought pride to all Hong Kong people, showcasing the exceptional capabilities of local athletes. "As with many members of the public, I have been cheering for Vivian Kong. We are thrilled that with her outstanding performance, superb fencing skills and perseverance during the competition, she has earned the well-deserved gold medal," he added. "I wish the Hong Kong, China Delegation will continue to achieve remarkable results in other events and unleash their potential to bring honour for Hong Kong." Meanwhile, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kevin Yeung, who is currently in the French capital, congratulated Kong in person. "With her superb performance and keen tactics in the competition, Vivian Kong claimed victory and realised the dream of Hong Kong citizens," Yeung said in a statement. "Witnessing the triumphant moment firsthand, I am both touched and delighted by her performance and demeanour of a great athlete. I believe Hong Kong citizens shared the joy as well." Hong Kong's rail giant MTR said Kong will receive complimentary train tickets for life, in recognition for her historic victory at the Paris Games. The rail operator added that all Hong Kong medallists from the Paris Olympics and Paralympics will also be granted lifetime free train passes.
