Jarrad Branthwaite is reportedly now demanding that Everton match the £160,000-a-week offer from Manchester United as the Toffees prepare a new contract for the defender.

Everton have turned down two offers for the 22-year-old from United this summer, who was previously deemed unlikely to make waves regarding speculation surrounding his future. The Merseyside club have set a £70million price tag on the centre-back that United have failed to meet, with their last bid being £50m.

Branthwaite established himself as one of the key players in Sean Dyche's team last season and is predicted to have a bright future at both club and national level.

In recognition of this, Everton are eager to offer Branthwaite a new deal. The defender still has three years remaining on his current contract, which is reportedly worth approximately £70,000-a-week.

According to the Daily Mail, negotiations over increased figures are expected to take place at the end of the window but Branthwaite is prepared to reject any new terms if Everton do not come close to matching United's proposal.

This potential impasse comes at a crucial time for Everton, who saw their latest takeover discussions with Friedkin Group collapse, thereby extending owner Fahrad Moshiri's now two-year attempt to sell the club.

Despite the recent setback, the club remains optimistic that new suitors will find a resolution.

While United had initially identified Branthwaite as a potential summer signing, it seems they have now cooled their interest following sporting director Dan Ashworth's recent conversation with his Everton counterpart Kevin Thelwell. During this discussion, Everton reiterated their intention to hold out for a fee closer to their £70m valuation.

Under the guidance of the club's new minority owners, United are committed to a transfer policy that avoids unnecessary expenditure on players. Despite shelling out £52million for Leny Yoro, the club is still in the market for a centre-back, full-back, midfielder and forward, depending on departures.

Branthwaite would be an ideal solution to United's defensive issues, but Everton remain steadfast in their refusal to let their star defender go on the cheap. As such, speculation continues to surround Branthwaite's future at the club.

Meanwhile, Everton's pre-season training has kicked off, with Branthwaite rejoining his teammates.

They are still working on strengthening their squad ahead of the new season, with hopes of finalising a loan deal for Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrom.
