BBC Breakfast guest breaks down speaking about family member

During Jon Kay and Sally Nugent’s interview on BBC Breakfast with Shalorna Warner and Lareesa Warner emotions were running high as they called for a change to the law.

Shalorna’s eight-month-old son Zackary Blades was killed in a motorway crash along with her sister Karlene Warner after a collision on the A1.

Their vehicle was hit by drunk driver Darryl Anderson who was driving at speeds of up to 141 mph. Zackary and Karlene were killed instantly when the incident happened at the end of May as Darryl was three times over the legal limit.

Now, the perpetrator has been jailed for 17 years and banned from driving for 21 years. However, the family of the victims are now calling for mandatory life driving bans for anyone who has been convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast to speak about their call for change, Shalorna said: “Zackary and Karlene, they were both taken, they were so innocent.

“They were both taken so tragically, it doesn’t sit right with me as a mother and a sister to sit and let that just be normal, it’s not normal.

“If we can do something to help the next families, in us, getting a bit of justice then we’re doing something for them both and that’s why I need to do it.”

Touching on the driving ban he received, she told the presenters she feels as though it’s nonsense as the majority of the time he won’t be able to drive, he’ll be behind bars.

Speaking about her nephew, Lareesa was moved to tears, she said: “He came to my house on Wednesday and we never saw him often because of where Shalorna lived. I didn’t think he’d remember me.

“Then he put his hands out to me, and I was like, this is the start of the bond we’re going to have. Shalorna said he doesn’t put his hands out to everyone. I just knew-”

However, the guest started to get overcome with emotion as she reflected on the memory with her nephew.

She said: “It’s all just been ripped away from us.”

Saying that her sister Karlene was a mother herself, Shalorna told the BBC hosts: “She was the best mum.

“They’re together now and I know he’s getting taken good care of. It does bring me a little bit of comfort, to know they’re together as well."
