Antelope Island wildfire prompts visitor center evacuation, park closure

A wildfire sparked Tuesday on Antelope Island State Park, prompting an evacuation of the park’s visitor center.

The building itself was not threatened, but it was safely emptied and the park was closed to the public after the fire was discovered and air and ground resources converged on the scene, according to Utah Fire Info.

First reported at around 1:10 p.m., the wildfire had scorched an estimated 50-100 acres as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Antelope Island itself spans only about 30,000 acres, though it is the largest island on Great Salt Lake. It is home to popular recreation areas as well the nation’s largest and oldest public bison herd.

It is not yet known how the fire may impact the state park’s structures or wildlife.

The cause of the newly burning wildfire has not yet been determined. More details about the fire and ongoing containment efforts weren’t immediately available.
