Man Utd will immediately get 'eye-watering bill' if they bank Mason Greenwood sell-on fee

Manchester United will get 50 per cent of Mason Greenwood's future transfer fee if he eventually leaves Marseille, but they won't be able to keep all of it for themselves. Getafe reportedly negotiated a crafty deal with the Red Devils before taking Greenwood on loan last season, which looks set to bank them millions in years to come.

The Spanish club have already taken £5.3million of the £26.7m package which took Greenwood to Marseille last week. Despite only taking him on loan in 2023/24, part of the arrangement was for Getafe to get 20 per cent of the fee paid to United when they sold the forward permanently.

However, according to The Athletic, that agreement actually extends to all of United's future earnings from Greenwood. Seeing as the Red Devils will earn 50 per cent of the fee paid to Marseille if the 22-year-old one day leaves, Getafe will take 20 per cent of the sell-on sum dished out to United.

If, for example, Marseille sell Greenwood several years down the line for £40m; £20m of that will be owed to United, who will immediately be obliged to send £4m of that on to Getafe.

The La Liga side not only stand to benefit financially from Greenwood, they also benefited from a sporting perspective last season as the forward racked up 10 goals across all competitions.

They couldn't afford to snap him up on a permanent basis, however, and Marseille beat Serie A giants Napoli and Lazio to poach the United academy product this summer. Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 before charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control made against him - which he denies - were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

On the signing, Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi said: "He's a champion, an international-level player. I don't know what happened, I'm not concentrating on private lives. When a player signs for the club, I consider him my child. Even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons."

Greenwood, who scored 35 goals in 129 games for United, added: "(De Zerbi) was just talking about his ambition and what he wants to do with the club. It was something that caught my eye, really.

"Watching him at Brighton and doing it in the Premier League was amazing, so hopefully he can do that with Marseille and get the club back to where they belong, which is near the top of the table."
