Ensign Peak fire update: 10% contained, firefighters optimistic

Crews responding to the fire above Ensign Peak had “a very successful” night, an official said Monday morning, but the blaze remains just 10% contained.

Brian Trick, a public information officer for the Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team, noted in front of the Capitol early Monday that the fire did not grow Sunday night.

The wildfire covers 204 acres and its cause is still undetermined, he said, though the Utah Fire Info website previously reported that the fire was human-caused. As of Monday though the website noted the cause was undetermined.

In firefighting, “containment” refers to how much of a blaze’s perimeter is secured, not how much of a fire is still burning. Trick reported that the 190 personnel responding to the fire hope to take advantage of Monday’s lower temperatures and higher humidity to further secure the perimeter.

“Things are looking incredibly good up there,” Trick said.
