Utah State football player dies in cliff jumping accident

Utah State University is mourning the death of football player Andre Seldon Jr. following an apparent drowning at Porcupine Reservoir on Saturday afternoon.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a man who was cliff diving and did not reappear from the water. Just after 9 p.m., the Utah Department of Public Safety’s dive team found Seldon Jr.’s body.

“Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information,” the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said.

Seldon Jr. was 22 years old.

“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” USU interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling said in a statement. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

Seldon Jr. previously spent two seasons at New Mexico State under Dreiling before transferring to Logan last spring. He also spent two seasons with Michigan from 2020-21. After leaving NMSU this offseason, Seldon Jr. committed to TCU before eventually joining Dreiling on the Aggies on May 10.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.,” Utah State athletic director Diana Sabau said. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”

Utah State said it will provide mental health resources and other types of support as the Aggies grieve Seldon Jr.’s death.

The death is the latest news to shake the Aggies’ football program. This month head coach Blake Anderson, associate vice president and deputy athletic director Jerry Bovee and director of player development Austin Albrecht were all terminated for an alleged failure to report a domestic violence case in April 2023.

Amy Crosbie, who was previously the executive associate athletic director for internal affairs and senior woman administrator, was also let go from the program.
