Sky News returns to air with huge changes after being yanked off air by IT outage

IT outages: Cyber security expert shares views on global issues

Sky News is broadcasting again after a global Microsoft outage forced it off air this morning. Viewers tuning in saw a static message apologising for the 'disruption' to the service at 6am, when the channel was meant to be on the air.

The channel returned later in the morning but was forced to operate low tech following the global IT issue. Presenters were forced to read from sheets of paper or their phones as the autocues were still out of action.

Meanwhile the graphics for the show were unavailable. Presenters were also unable to cut to pre-recorded segments of programmes which had originally been scheduled for today.

Presenter Jacquie Beltrao took to X to explain the issue to viewers. Using a fingers crossed emoji, she agonised: "We’re obviously not on air - we’re trying."

Sky isn't the only news outlet to be hit by technical struggles as a corrupt Microsoft Windows anti-virus update is thought to be responsible for a series of worldwide glitches.

Other major networks facing issues this morning included SBS, ABC and Network 10. The broadcasting crisis has stretched across the globe as the Sky News Australia team also experienced exactly the same glitches.

It was reportedly sparked by a faulty update to the antivirus program CrowdStrike, a US cyber security company used by many British brands. The aftermath has seen banks, supermarkets, IT firms and airlines brought to their knees too.

The broadcaster resorted to playing an old Windrush documentary, followed by one on Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as the struggled to resume normal broadcasting.

Microsoft published on its own social media account that it is investigating investigating "an issue impacting users' ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services".

Morning anchor Anna Jones welcomed viewers back to the channel saying: "Hello, a very good morning and welcome to Sky News. Let's get you up to date with our top stories today.

"A major global IT outage is hitting businesses worldwide, including here at Sky News. It's affecting airports and grounding flights. The London Stock Exchange is amongst businesses affected.'

Her colleague Gareth Barlow, continued: "A major global IT outage is impacting many of the world's largest companies, including us here at Sky News.

"The system failure is believed to have been caused by a flawed anti-virus update – although nothing as yet has been confirmed."
