Death in Paradise star Sara Martins has completely changed her look for an epic new Amazon Prime Video series.

Those About to Die will be available on the streamer in the UK this Friday and invite viewers to discover a new side to Ancient Rome.

Following her brief return to the hit BBC detective series this year, Sara portrays Cala, a mother fighting for survival in one of the most brutal eras in history.

She joins a star-studded cast which includes Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Vespasian and Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon as Tenax, the owner of a betting tavern.

The Roland Emmerich-helmed series is Sara’s most action-packed role to date, and some viewers may not recognise her at first glance thanks to her new look.

Previously known for her signature curly hair when she portrays DS Camille Bordey, the actress is now sporting long dreadlocks for her role as Cala.

Plus, with Those About to Die’s period setting there also comes period-accurate costumes.

Although Cala doesn’t rank as high as other characters in Roman society - such as celebrity chariot rider Scorpus (played by Dimitri Leonidas) - she’s still decked out in some spectacular garments.

Stills and footage from the series have revealed Sara wearing beautiful robes and smocks, a far cry from her sensible yet stylish attire in Death in Paradise.

While her new series is set 2000 years before Camille’s investigations in Saint Marie, Sara exclusively told Express.co.uk that she still found some similarities between the two heroines.

“To be honest, they are both strong women,” she explained. “Obviously in very different times, but probably Camille would have behaved the same in Cala’s situation.

“They’re both very strong, intelligent, they’re very adaptable. In terms of the core of the character, they’re not so different.

“Obviously, the situation, the background and everything is. But if you put one in the other situation, they probably would have behaved the same.”

She also confirmed to fans there are “no plans” for her to return as Camille just yet, though added she can “never say never” to another appearance.

Death in Paradise is set to continue at Christmas this year, with new detective Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) set to take over from DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little).

Those About To Die Will Launch Exclusively On 19th July On Prime Video UK & Ireland. Death in Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
