Tiger Woods will not be joined by his son Charlie at The Open this weekend after he played an important role at last month's US Open. Charlie, who is 15 years old, has taken after his dad by honing his golf skills and has been widely tipped as a future star of the sport.

The teenager competed in a pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic in February before taking part in the US Open qualifier in April. He failed to make his debut on the PGA Tour but clearly possesses a lot of talent and will be hoping to keep developing on the same upward trajectory.

Woods is often joined by Charlie at tournaments but will be on his own at Royal Troon, with his son back home preparing for his next event. He is gearing up for his debut appearance in the US Junior Amateur, which starts at Oakland Hills Country Club the day after The Open finishes.

Charlie was given a special role by Woods at the US Open, serving as his unofficial swing coach during the event at Pinehurst. At the time, Woods explained that his son had seen him 'hit more golf balls than anyone' and that nobody would have as much specialist knowledge as him.

The 48-year-old also outlined the importance of having his son by his side, saying: "I think having Charlie out here is very special, to have the father-son relationship that we have and to extend it into this part of both of our lives, he's playing a lot of junior golf, and I'm still playing out here.

"It's great for us to be able to share these moments together. As far as his responsibilities, it's the same. I trust him with my swing and my game. He's seen it more than anybody else in the world. He's seen me hit more golf balls than anyone.

"I tell him what to look for, especially with putting. He gave me a couple little side bits today, which was great, because I get so entrenched in hitting certain putts to certain pins, I tend to forget some of the things I'm working on. I just want to see the balls rolling.

"He reminds me every now and again, which is great. We have a great relationship and rapport like that and it's a wonderful experience for both of us."

Woods has been practicing at Royal Troon this week ahead of The Open, which is set to begin on Thursday. He is scheduled to tee off at 2.37pm alongside Patrick Cantley and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele.
