Gareth Southgate has admirers among INEOS, but Manchester United are reportedly highly unlikely to target the former England manager if they sack Erik ten Hag this season. Southgate will be available if United are forced to make a change, but there is said to be another candidate at the top of the club's shortlist.

The 53-year-old announced his resignation as England boss after falling short in a second successive Euros final against Spain on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag's future is far from certain despite United's decision to trigger the 12-month extension in his current contract until 2026.

According to the Mail, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are fully committed to backing Ten Hag with the tools he needs to enjoy a successful reign at Old Trafford.

But it's no secret that United's shock FA Cup victory against Manchester City in May rescued the Dutchman after a disastrous second season in charge.

He oversaw the club's worst-ever Premier League and Champions League campaigns, failing to qualify for European football next season until FA Cup glory earned a Europa League spot.

A well-publicised search for his potential successor included talks with Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, Marco Silva and Roberto De Zerbi.

United ultimately decided to show faith in Ten Hag to turn their fortunes around, but a disastrous start to the new campaign may force INEOS' hand.

The report adds that in the event of a dismissal, Southgate isn't expected to be near the frame to take over at Old Trafford.

Instead, Tuchel looks set to be first in line if United sack Ten Hag next term after impressing Ratcliffe during a meeting in Monaco in June.

The former Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss is claimed to have outlined how he would approach restoring United to former glories.

But, for now, Ten Hag has the full backing of Ratcliffe and INEOS ahead of a crucial season for the club and himself.
