House of the Dragon viewers have expressed their “heartbreak” after seeing the near-silent exchange between Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) and his mother Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) in the latest instalment of the HBO show.

Season 2, episode 5 contains tear-jerking scenes of the king, who is revealed to be still alive but severely injured. Following a brutal betrayal by his brother Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) Aegon is seen barely clinging to life, with horrific burns and scars all over his body.

Alicent is undoubtedly wracked with guilt, as it was her harsh words about her son’s incompetence that sparked his decision to fly to war - despite his lack of experience. During the fifth episode, Alicent visits Aemond on multiple occasions, where he appears barely conscious.

In one particularly moving scene, however, Alicent is leaving Aegon’s room when he utters a single word. “Mummy,” he says in a frail voice.

Taking to Reddit, fans of the Game of Thrones spin-off series shared their emotional responses to the scene. Posting a screenshot of the moment, one penned: “I wasn’t prepared for this, it broke my heart.

“Alicent and Aegon are both my ride or die characters, and their relationship is so heartbreaking, tragic and compelling.

“However I wasn’t prepared for this, it completely got me off guard. The best 5 seconds of a rather mid episode,” they added. (sic)

“No matter how much alicents words cut through his heart. He loves her till the very end,” another fan added sadly. (sic)

Another admitted: “Aegon has done awful things, but this broke my heart. I think he genuinely just wants to be loved. He never wanted the crown and was never prepared to rule.

“He went to battle to try and prove himself, and the first thing he wants while he’s in pain and suffering is his mom. He’s been the stand out character for me this season. I never expected to feel so sorry for him.” (sic)

“Aegon is a standout character even when he’s on the brink of death and says just one word,” a third agreed.

One more wrote: “This was the best scene of the whole episode. The way this dynamic hurts me the most. Idk if the writers intentionally or unintentionally wished for it that way but it is by far the most compelling and painful dynamic of season 2 for me. Made a bitch almost tear up fr.” (sic)

House of the Dragon season 2 is set to air in the UK on Mondays at 2am BST (British Summer Time) on Sky Atlantic and NOW. The same episode will also be broadcast again on Monday at 9pm.
