Dome Brings Culinary Retro-Futurism to Bali

Beach club and resort Desi Potato Head in Bali has revealed its latest restaurant offering, a retro-futuristic experience titled Dome. Dome serves diners natural food and wine in a futuristic and earthy environment. Much of the interior is made of reclaimed furniture to balance the old and new.

The exterior sets the futuristic vibe with a dome appearance inspired by the iconic Fuller Dome Home. Concrete walls give the exterior a raw look as the appearance mimics geodesic dome homes but with modern details like the silver Dome sign.

Once diners enter, they are greeted by a steel circular central bar that the restaurant revolves around. Blue pillars with light fixtures attached match the blue floor and provide a unique way to disguise essential elements. Keeping in line with the aesthetic, stainless steel monoliths house JBL 4355 speakers so diners can be treated to vinyl DJ sets.

Reclaimed wood and furniture are featured throughout but the OMA-designed sofas and lounge chairs designed by Potato Head's in-house design studio provide a custom touch. Decors like Indonesian tribal sculptures and antique rugs balance the concrete and steel architecture.

"The architecture is so futuristic, so we wanted to break it down with natural elements," said creative director Isaac Larose. "If you look closely, you can see the imperfections in the shades of the reclaimed furniture. We decided to celebrate these imperfections rather than hide them, just like we do with our wines and produce."

Dome is open now and you can view the interior in the gallery above.
