GMB's Richard Madeley brutally shuts down Angela Rayner over Tory dig in tense clash

Angela Rayner asked about 'honeymoon period' on GMB

Richard Madeley was praised for "putting Angela Rayner in her place" on today's episode of Good Morning Britain. The Labour co-leader was invited on to the ITV breakfast show for a grilling by the presenter and his co-star, Kate Garraway.

They touched on some of the new government's policies, since being elected by the nation on July 4, before Mr Madeley saw an opportunity to take a swipe at her. The politician said: "We said it before the election, we can't do everything all at once."

She explained: "We have to grow the economy to pay for our public services and if we'd have grown the economy at the average rate of the oversea countries, we'd have had over £140billion more in our economy and that's nearly £40billion that we'd have had to spend on public services.

"That's the real scandal, that we've been left with, such as dire inheritance, hightest tax burden, lowest growth. That is why the Chancellor is absolutely focused on making sure we turn that around."

Richard took his chance to rip into her as he said: "Well it's interesting, and I wonder how much longer this will go on for, you're in that kind of Honeymoon period where you can keep blaming the previous government and what you inherited.

"Every new government does that when they take over. By past history, we reckon you've got about another two months to be able to do that, and then you'll be stepping on your own record."

Fans of GMB posted to social media as they applauded Richard Madeley for his "take down" of the Labour leader.

Posting to X (formerly Twitter), one user said: "Brilliant from Richard certainly put Rayner in her place".

Another added: "Well done Richard how you cut Rayner off has made my day". Someone else said: "All Kate does is try to get a rise out of people, Richard asks questions we want the answers to!"

Someone else agreed with Richard, as they wrote: "I saw her on BBC Breakfast, 18 times she said 14 years, when anything goes wrong it will continually be the Tories to blame.

"They were the opposition, they also had votes in Parliament, they had their part to play. Sick of their treating us like mugs, they had insight in to this."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
