EPD investigates fire at Stonecutters refuse centre

The Environmental Protection Department says it is investigating a fire on Sunday at a refuse reception centre on Stonecutters Island. Firefighters had largely put out the blaze by 7 pm, after smoke had been reported in some of the waste about two hours' earlier. No injuries were reported and all employees were evacuated. The centre has temporarily suspended its operations and users have been told to use other collection points. The department said it would work with the contractor and the Fire Services Department to investigate the cause of the fire. The department has also told the contractor to submit a report within seven days.
