Subdivided flat residents living in extreme heat: SoCo

A survey by the Society for Community Organisation (SoCo) on Sunday highlighted the difficulties faced by tenants living in inadequate accommodation such as subdivided flats, cage homes and rooftop slums during the recent hot weather. Most of the 300 tenants surveyed reported difficulty sleeping and feeling unwell due to the intense heat. According to the Observatory, the temperature reached almost 35 degrees Celsius on Sunday afternoon. The survey showed that the indoor temperature in these cramped flats could reach as high as 41 degrees Celsius. Sze Lai-shan, the organisation's deputy director, said the heat had also increased the utility bills of these tenants. She called on the government to subsidise water and electricity bills for these tenants, and to build more public and transitional housing so that they have decent accommodation.
