ITV General Election coverage brought to sudden halt as Angela Rayner forced to apologise

Election 2024: Angela Rayner says sorry as she grabs an umbrella for the rain

Angela Rayner was forced to apologise as she brought ITV's coverage of the General Election to a sudden halt.

Tom Bradby, who anchored election nights in 2015, 2017 and 2019, was joined by George Osborne, Nicola Sturgeon and Ed Balls to deliver the 2024 results to viewers.

During the programme, Bradby spoke to Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Rayner, who was live from Manchester. With Labour on track to win 410 seats and the Conservatives just 131, the 44-year-old is looking ahead to a Labour government.

Rayner said: "Hopefully we can go forward now and turn the page on the chaos and the decline that we've seen under the Conservatives and have that programme for growth."

Just as the politician finished speaking, she was forced to take action as it began pouring in Manchester. Leaning over to grab an umbrella, Rayner told viewers: "Just leaning over to get a brolly, sorry."

As she shielded herself with the blue umbrella, Bradby declared: "That's quite alright! We wouldn't want you getting wet, it's raining."

Not letting the weather ruin her mood, Rayner laughed: "It's Manchester!" Later in the interview, Bradby assumed Rayner was feeling "amazing" at that point due to the exit poll results.

She responded: "It's incredible how many people, it looks like, have given Labour that opportunity. I've been a member of parliament for nine years and I've spent all of that time in opposition, so to have the honour and the privilege to be in government and serve the people.

"As Keir Starmer says, if Labour does win power tonight, it's about putting country first and party second." Rayner insisted that Labour's main priority is to "deliver for the British people who desperately need change."

Sharing her "message of the night", Rayner said: "The Labour Party have learnt from history is to never take votes for granted. People who vote for you deserve that respect because they put their trust in you and we don't take that for granted."

She added: "If we do have the honour to form the government tomorrow, then we will all work really hard to repay that trust that the people have put in us."

At the end of the interview, Bradby admitted the ITV team were "really grateful" that Rayner stood out in the pouring rain.
