BBC axes huge list of shows to make way for election coverage in biggest shake-up yet

The BBC is set to air eighteen continuous hours of election coverage as Brits wait with baited breath to find out who their new Prime Minister will be. BBC One will remove all of its scheduled daytime content, with even big hitter BBC Breakfast being axed from the airwaves.

However, host Jon Kay is expected to still appear on the channel tomorrow morning, as he's involved in the rolling news coverage. The coverage will begin at 9:55pm this evening - just five minutes before polling stations close - and won't end until 4pm the day after.

BBC News At Ten is the first programme to be disrupted, to be replaced by continuous election coverage throughout the evening and into the night. Clive Myrie and Laura Kuenssberg will be major commentators during this pivotal moment in British history.

They'll replace the long-standing Huw Edwards following last year's departure from the channel, and will be joined by political editor Chris Mason for the overnight coverage. Meanwhile, Jon Kay and Sophie Raworth will head the morning updates in place of BBC Breakfast.

Homes Under The Hammer, Scam Interceptors and Animal Park will all be casualties of the scheduling change. Other commentators during the mammoth 18-hour stint include BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine delivering the swingometer coverage from Cardiff. Then there'll be Kirsty Wark reporting from Glasgow and Andrea Catherwood repping Belfast.

Reeta Chakrabarti, Fiona Bruce, Naga Munchetty, Nick Watt, Alex Forsyth, Victoria Derbyshire and Vicki Young are also main players.

Meanwhile, although the election - and the nerve-wracking possibility of a Labour super-majority - is all Brits can talk about, ITV's GMB has taken the shock step of axing all of its coverage today due to "broadcasting rules".

That means that, while the BBC begins its coverage this evening and continues throughout the night, ITV won't be screening anything until 6am the following morning.

Charlotte Hawkins announced the shock news in an Instagram post to her 270,000 followers, in which she urged them to head out to the polling stations and vote.

"The calm before the storm… Election Day is finally here!" she announced.

"So we can’t talk about politics on @gmb due to broadcasting rules… but we are counting down to our election special this time tomorrow morning from 6am.

"Use your vote today & don’t forget ID!"
