Susanna Reid and her co-presenter Ed Balls were joined on Good Morning Britain by Labour's National Campaign Coordinator Pat McFadden with the hot topic being raising taxes.

The GMB presenter noted that the ITV show's latest poll results showed that Labour's support had "slipped a bit" for the first time.

Ed told viewers: "Labour is considering an inheritance tax raise to redistribute wealth if they get into power," while Susanna asked the politician to "confirm or deny" the party's latest move.

Pat shut down the reports as "absolute nonsense" before the presenter quizzed him about Sir Keir Starmer. The Labour leader said he would not work 24/7 as Prime Minister - even leaving work at 6pm on a Friday.

The dad-of-two insisted he would continue to have “protected time for the kids” at the end of the week.

"Can I ask before we go... if Sir Keir Starmer becomes prime minister does he clock off at 6pm on a weekend or a Friday evening?" Susanna quizzed.

Pat replied: "Honestly... this is such nonsense. First of all, I think it's a good thing some people want to have time with their family one evening a week.

"Part of that is, of course, Friday night dinner is an important part of the Jewish tradition and for Keir and his wife's family."

Labour's Pat suggested it was all "such desperate stuff".

"Would anyone criticise a politician for saying, 'I want to go to church on Sunday.' I don't think they would. This is just such desperate stuff," he continued. "I hope he does spend a few hours with his family on a Friday evening. That does us all a lot of good."

Ed quipped: "That's alright because Pat McFadden will be there in Downing Street seven nights a week."

His abrupt snub comes just moments before the interview took a bizarre turn as Pat asked Susanna if she would now like him to sing.

"I thought you asked me to sing this morning but it's not happened," the politician mused.

Susanna chuckled: "Right... if you think that's going to be a decider what is your karoke tune?"

Pat replied: "I can not match my colleague Jonathan Ashworth. When I saw him doing this on Monday, I thought, 'here we go.'"

Ed then urged the Labour candidate to get his vocals ready if he wanted to be a part of Simon Cowell's new boyband.

"You can't say you want to audition for Simon Cowell's boyband and then not deliver," the GMB host stated. "Got to give us a line."

Pat added: "My musical days are over. My musical hero is Bruce Springsteen," before urging the public to vote on July 4.

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak appeared on GMB for the first time during his campaign trail in a pre-recorded interview.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
