Sergio Garcia launched into a furious tirade at R&A officials after losing his cool during qualifying for The Open. The Spaniard has been forced to take part in the qualifying tournament after losing his Open exemption due to his links with LIV Golf.

Garcia, the marquee name in the field, was being followed by a healthy crowd which left him frustrated while making his way down the fairway. He was not happy with the organisation of the fans and snapped at R&A officials, telling them: "It needs to be organised better."

Course marshals were seen waving the crowd through on the left-hand side of the eighth hole, with Garcia being made to wait on the tee box. He ended up pulling his shot left into trouble and was visibly agitated as he trudged down the fairway to find his ball.

The 44-year-old was eventually given a warning for slow play but was adamant that the fans were to blame for delaying his shots. The warning appeared to push Garcia over the edge as he sarcastically quipped: "You're right, we're always wrong."

Garcia was taking part in Open qualifying for the second year in a row, having competed at the same Wirral venue 12 months earlier. He failed to make the cut on that occasion, falling short after 36 holes to miss out on one of the coveted spots at Royal Liverpool.

Speaking after his disappointment a year ago, Garcia heaped praise on the fans who lined the course to support him, saying: "I’m sure that a lot of the people who were following me today would’ve loved to have seen me at Hoylake, but hopefully, I’ll be back soon.

"I’ve always felt very blessed about the love I get, but here in the UK even more. To see the kind of crowds we had for a British Open qualifier, it was pretty impressive. I hope they enjoyed it, but I would just have loved to give them a couple more things to cheer for."

Garcia played in 24 successive Opens before failing to qualify for last year's tournament, a run stretching back to 1998. He will be desperate to put things right this time around, with four additional spots up for grabs in West Lancashire.

Scottie Scheffler is the early favourite to win the Open, having dominated in 2024 with six PGA Tour wins from 10 attempts. Rory McIlroy will also be hoping to give a good account of himself following his spectacular choke on the final day of the US Open.
