Emmerdale's Matty in danger as transphobic cellmate turns violent

Moira reassures Matty on Emmerdale

Matty Barton has high hopes of being released from prison in next week's Emmerdale, but his joy is short-lived when he gets an unwelcome visitor in his cell.

During Monday's visit to the village (July 8), Matty is in high spirits after discovering that his cellmate Les has accepted him as a trans man and he's eager to share the news with Amy during her visit.

When he gets a new solicitor Matty thinks there's a chance of being allowed home leaving Amy pleased to see Matty in a more positive mood.

But, when their visit ends, Amy watches Matty leave and is approached by Robbo, who she mistakes for Les.

Sadly, Robbo's sympathetic act gets the truth about Matty from Amy, who is unaware of the danger she has now put her husband in.

When Matty returns to his cramped cell and Les leaves to see his solicitor, Robbo arrives, sparking fear into Matty when he realises the thug has spoken to his wife.

Matty is trapped and terrified when Robbo reveals he's learnt the truth and the menacing transphobe closes in on him. Meanwhile, an upbeat Amy arrives home to tell them about Matty's positive attitude.

Later in the week, things worsen for Matty while Amy and Moira wonder why they've not heard from him.

As fans of the ITV soap will know, Matty has been remanded in prison after accidently stabbing Samson. The incident occured when a feud between Josh and Matty took a violent turn and Samson was pushed onto the knife Matty was holding.

Samson then misled his family and the authorities, claiming that Matty had intentionally stabbed him.

But next week, Samson announces his plans to leave the village while Matty's safety hangs in the balance. Moira is furious when she learns about Josh and Samson's plan to embark on their European trip earlier than planned and vows to prevent them.

Meanwhile, Lydia could suspect Samson is hiding something when she witnesses Josh threatening Samson and pressuring him to continue lying to the police. But after meeting with Moira, will Lydia agree to help her?

Emmerdale continues weekdays on ITV from 7:30pm.
