Sally Nugent sparks fury with 'hopeless' Ashworth grilling as she returns to BBC Breakfast

BBC Breakfast: Sally interviews Jonathan Ashworth

BBC Breakfast welcomed Labour's Jonathan Ashworth to Monday's (July 1) show but Sally Nugent's grilling of the politician left viewers underwhelmed. They took to X to share their thoughts.

@MargeDoyle18 observed: "That interview with John Ashworth by Sally Nugent was hopeless. Why didn’t she tackle some of his comments, which is only ever to criticise the Conservatives. He looks like a little boy and speaks like one, but..."

@FinnishSuomi asked: "Is Sally Nugent tired? Not a great interview with Ashworth. #bbcbreakfast." @oppositejohn opined: "Jonathan Ashworth bland and lacklustre on #bbcbreakfast this morning #labour #GeneralElection."

@JustineClaire65 asked: "@BBCBreakfast Am I watching a live Labour Party political broadcast from Jonathan Ashworth. Uninterrupted and uncontested by the interviewer, Sally Nugent. Except for the occasional prompt. Did I miss the other parties getting this opportunity?"

However @majidjamie1 enjoyed the interview commenting: "@BBCBreakfast, it’s normally difficult to praise a politician. This morning I was very impressed by Johnathan Ashworth Calmly answering all questions without blaming others. Well done John."

During the interview Jonathan pointed out that a lot of viewers were still deciding what to do on Thursday when they vote in the General Election.

"If you want change in the country - if you've had enough of all the economic chaos that puts your mortgage up.

"If you've had enough of all the scandals from the partying in Downing Street to the insider gambling scandal we've seen in this campaign.

"If you've had enough of waiting for longer and longer on the NHS then vote for change on Thursday. Do not wake up on Friday to five more years of Rishi Sunak," he said.

The interview came as Sally reurned to the show having been missing on and off from the programme.

Last week she was absent from the red sofa on both Monday (June 24) and Tuesday (June 25) as Jon Kay fronted the show with Sarah Campbell. Sally, 52, typically fronts the BBC show with Jon, 54, from Monday to Wednesday each week.

Prior to her that absence, Sally hosted Monday and Wednesday the previous week. On the Friday of that week she also appeared in a pre-recorded interview with the late Rob Burrow's wife, Lindsey Burrow, as she discussed her late husband, their relationship and their family.

BBC Breakfast is on BBC daily at 6am.
