Gary Neville received a light-hearted scolding from Roy Keane and Ian Wright for his self-deprecating humour before England's Euro 2024 last-16 victory over Slovakia.

The punditry team, live on ITV, dissected the Three Lions' emphatic win, which saw them advance to the quarter-finals, courtesy of goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. In a moment of modesty during the pre-match discussion, Neville, who has 85 England caps to his name, downplayed his own footballing prowess by quipping: "You know this isn't a team of Nevilles".

His jest was met with laughter, but also a prompt intervention from ex-Manchester United colleague Keane, who questioned: "Why are you putting yourself down? " while Wright simultaneously expressed his disapproval, remarking: "Yeah, we've told you about that".

Despite a trophy-laden career at Manchester United, Neville often minimises his contributions, a habit Keane has previously criticised, advising him against constant self-criticism. Post-match, following a nail-biting encounter that nearly saw England bow out, Neville called on manager Gareth Southgate to implement significant changes to avoid a repeat of their lacklustre performance in the upcoming quarter-final match.

England hero Phil Neville breathed a huge sigh of relief after the Lionesses' dramatic Euro 2022 quarter-final win over Spain - but warned that things must change. "Relief is the word of the day," he said, before adding: "We've been very lucky and we should thank our lucky stars.

"We were woeful and we've been woeful now for four games. Not even in extra-time have we played particularly well. We drew Slovakia onto us and they were unlucky at the end." Neville went on to say: "We've got to change something dramatically now.

"I've played with Gareth Southgate and I know him. He's a great guy and he's got massive integrity, but he will realise tonight that he was so close to the edge. Very close to the edge". England will now face the challenge of taking on Switzerland next Saturday (July 6) in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

It was Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane who came to the rescue of Gareth Southgate in Sunday's match with the 21-year-old continuing his extraordinary penchant of last-minute goals for club and country. During Declan Rice's post-match duties, he waxed lyrical about his midfield partner.

"It was a big moment for [the] 21-year-old, that takes a lot of guts, he told BBC Sport. "People don't understand what you have to go through to get over the line. We are not playing against invisible men. They are top footballers, they kept going after us. It is about waiting for those moments as the game got stretched we created more. The fans tonight I cannot speak highly enough of them. So grateful they are all here to experience that."
