Roy Keane and Gary Neville were in disagreement over England after their dramatic 2-1 win over Slovakia in the Euro 2024 round of 16. The Three Lions were heading out of the tournament until Jude Bellingham's sublime 95th minute overhead kick in Germany.

Harry Kane pounced on Ivan Toney's flick-on in the first minute of extra time as England booked a quarter-final showdown with Switzerland in Dusseldorf. But they were mightily close to one of the worst results in the country's history.

England were desperately poor until Bellingham's last-gasp equaliser sparked wild scenes in Gelsenkirchen. Gareth Southgate appeared to be staring down the barrel before the Real Madrid midfielder spared his, and his team-mates', blushes.

The ITV pundits had been brutal in their half-time assessment with former England assistant coach Gary Neville warning the match had "Iceland vibes" about it, referencing the nation's woeful Euro 2016 exit eight years ago.

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=114291&playerApiId=v114291');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v114291"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

But Irishman Keane remarked at full-time that the most important thing is the result, with England having ultimately underwhelmed with their performances in all four of their matches at the tournament so far.

Keane said: "Not really [nothing's been solved]. Sometimes after a game you reflect on it, I know the lads will talk about performances but at this level it is about getting over the line and winning. Everyone wants a great performance but if they keep getting results and going through...

"The next game always seems tough. If you perform like that you're going to go out but let's see how they go. But you have to give them praise. We were obviously really critical at half-time but they found a way to win.

"The top players found a way. God help us when Bellingham starts playing well because he's produced two huge moments and they're getting over the line. You have to give credit where it's due.

"They've found a way, you have to give credit for that. Some of the greatest satisfaction I've had in my career has been when you don't play well but you win a game of football."

Keane's former Manchester United team-mate Neville did not see things the same way, though. He reacted: "I think everybody in the country has been crying out for more changes after every single match, from game one, two, three.

"I think the same clamour will happen again for [Cole] Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, for other players to come into the team to create more balance, more excitement.

"Getting over the line and winning is all important in a month-long tournament but to think you can go through a month tournament playing like we are doing and get through to the end I think is unrealistic."

While Neville's fellow ex-England international Ian Wright said: "Still you look forward to the next game but you don't look forward to it with any real... you don't look forward to it thinking we're playing well.

"It feels like we're a moments team. As much as Roy is saying that, what we do need is some structure. What are we going to do - bring another individual [to the fore] and say 'it's his turn now'? At some stage we're going to have to find a way to beat teams playing through them."

England face Switzerland next Saturday (July 6) at 5pm UK time at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf.
