Gary Lineker did not mince his words as he reflected on Italy's shambolic defeat to Switzerland, which abruptly ended their hopes of winning Euro 2024. The defending champions were second best in every department as Switzerland reached the quarter-finals with a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Italy failed to get going and were punished in the 37th minute when Remo Freuler opened the scoring for Switzerland with a fine finish. They doubled their advantage just seconds after the half-time interval, with Ruben Vargas curling an unstoppable strike into the top corner.

Reflecting on the manner of Italy's defeat on BBC Sport, Lineker summed up their abysmal performance with just 11 words as he said: "I don't think I've witnessed a worse Italian team than this."

Fellow pundit Alan Shearer was quick to credit Switzerland's excellent display, with the underdogs having more shots and attempts on target despite Italy edging the possession stats.

He said: "Switzerland totally dominated that game, they were absolutely fantastic. They looked really fit and scored two fantastic goals. They deserve their quarter-final spot.

"I wasn't a big supporter of them [Italy] in the group stage. I looked at them and straight away thought they were weak up front. They had to try and keep things tight and nick a game because they offered nothing. I didn't believe they were a good team having watched them three times in the group stage."

Micah Richards pointed to the chemistry between Switzerland's players as the deciding factor, with Italy looking disjointed throughout the entirety of the match.

"If a Switzerland player was out of position, you had someone filling in," said Richards. "It's almost like the Italians today were doing their own jobs and there was no cohesion between them. Nobody knew when to drop, when to step up, when to pass the ball. It was all just a bit disoriented."

Switzerland's triumph over Italy means they will face England in the quarter-finals if the Three Lions manage to beat Slovakia on Sunday. Gareth Southgate's men will certainly need to be at their best to stand any chance of winning, having failed to impress in their opening three matches despite finishing at the top of their group.
