Bargain Hunt: Expert not impressed with wooden propeller

It seemed as though one particular buy failed to impress auctioneer James Lewis during an episode of Bargain Hunt. In the repeated instalment, BBC viewers saw the red team partnered with expert Izzie Balmer, who was tasked with helping them spend £300 on three items.

After wandering around the racecourse, team member H discovered a wooden propeller which had been converted into a clock.

Originally it was being sold for £140, with H admitting to his teammate Maisha and Izzie that he was drawn to it, but wasn’t keen on spending that much.

With the seller saying he could let them have it for £120, Izzie explained she’s seen them do well at an auction in the past but has also witnessed them completely fail.

She said: “People do collect them, it is expensive for auction but it would tick the big spend, it would tick one of the challenges.”

Despite having some time to think about it, H and Marisha returned and managed to haggle the price down to £95.

When Charlie met up with auctioneer James Lewis, he wasn’t thrilled with the item, especially after learning how much they’d paid for it.

Inspecting it, he said: “It didn’t start life as a good propeller, I’d be surprised if that thing ever flew.

“Then somebody has ripped the front clock off of what looks to be from a Teasmade and hammered it on the front of it. It’s an absolute shocking thing!”

Putting an estimate of £30 to £50 on it, he was appalled to learn they brought it for £95.

As James started to introduce it to the room of potential buyers, he quipped: “Completely bonkers, £35 bid? You’re not going to see another!”

In the end, it managed to sell for £40 which gave them a loss of £55. However, their luck seemed to change when their Lord Of The Rings figure of Aragorn was a massive hit with buyers.

Buying it for £150, the bids started coming in thick and fast as the red team quickly made a profit within minutes.

Selling for a total of £260, Izzie applauded the incredible sale, as they finished selling all of their items, Charlie quipped: “I tell you what H, you’ve made £100 despite buying that propeller.

Agreeing, Izzie quipped: “I know, which is seriously impressive!”

Despite both teams making money, H and Maisha were the winners of the episode with a total profit of £100.
