Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy will reportedly leave the Premier League side when his contract expires at the end of the month. The former striker has been a member of Erik ten Hag's coaching team for the past two years, predominantly working with the club’s strikers.

McCarthy was praised during his first season at Old Trafford. He was partly credited with Marcus Rashford’s supreme form in the 2022-23 campaign, when the forward scored 30 goals across all competitions.

However, the South African coach faced criticism from supporters last season as United scored only 57 goals in their 38 Premier League matches.

According to The Athletic, McCarthy will leave United when his contract expires at the end of the month as he wants to pursue a managerial career. Ten Hag is expected to have two coaches added to his team to replace McCarthy and Eric Ramsay, who left in February to become head coach at Minnesota United.

Ten Hag was retained by United despite INEOS chiefs openly exploring alternatives and speaking with the former Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel. Ten Hag is set to see his coaching team changed, though, in a bid to improve on last season’s eighth-placed Premier League finish.

It is widely reported that United are in talks with their former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy over a role at Old Trafford. Van Nistelrooy has been out of work for 12 months after leaving his position as head coach at PSV.

Go Ahead Eagles boss Rene Hake is also on the verge of taking a coaching role with the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, McCarthy recently spoke glowingly of United co-chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, insisting that the INEOS chief is ‘very nice’.

"I met him a few times because he's very often at the training ground at Carrington, making waves, getting to know the people that work for the club, trying to help rebuild the club back to where it's supposed to be at the top," McCarthy told South African broadcaster 947 Joburg.

"They are at the club quite a lot. He's a very nice man, he seems to know people by name and that's the very surprising part, you know? You have a conversation and he calls you by your name. I think that's impressive.

"For a billionaire, he doesn't have to bother getting to know my name or any of the staff if you're not the manager but he does know our names and it's quite refreshing.

“They show that much respect to the staff that work for them and I thought it was a really nice touch. 'Benni, everything okay? How do you find this?'. It's just nice."
