Former Celtic midfielder Landry Nguemo has died in a car accident aged just 38. Tributes are being made to the ex-Cameroon international whose death was announced by the Cameroon Football Federation on Thursday.

In a statement, the governing body said: "The Cameroonian Football Federation has just learned the tragic news of the passing of former Indomitable Lion Landry Nguemo in a traffic accident. Nguemo, who was a key player for the Cameroonian national team from 2006 to 2014 and a former member of Girondins de Bordeaux, will be remembered for his contributions to football.

"FECAFOOT extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football community."

Meanwhile, Celtic said: "Everyone at Celtic Football Club is shocked and saddened at the news of Landry Nguemo's passing at the young age of 38. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with Landry's family and friends at this sad time."

Nguemo made 43 appearances for Celtic during a loan spell from French club Nancy in the 2009-10 season. He played a key role in the campaign under Tony Mowbray and then Neil Lennon.

Celtic missed out on the Scottish Premier League title to Rangers in that campaign.

The Hoops were widely reported to be keen to sign Nguemo permanently at the end of the season, but a deal with Nancy could not be reached. He remained with the Ligue 1 club for another year before joining divisional rivals Bordeaux.

Nguemo joined Saint-Etienne in 2015 before making a quick departure to Turkish outfit Akhisar Belediyespor. He played for Kayserispor and Norwegian club Kongsvinger before retiring in 2019.

Cameroon capped the defensive midfielder on 41 occasions. He scored three times for his country, played at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, and finished as a runner-up in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008.

Reports have claimed that Nguemo died in a traffic accident near the Cameroonian town of Obala. However, the circumstances of his death are yet to be officially verified and an investigation is underway.

Nguemo had most recently been a youth team coach at his former club Nancy. He was appointed in 2021 but it is unclear if he remained in this role at the time of his death.
