Gary Lineker is fronting his final major tournament as BBC anchor, according to one media insider. The 63-year-old has been a regular feature on television screens since joining the channel in the 1990s and is their highest paid star after earning £1.35million during the BBC’s 2022/23 financial year. He is currently hosting their Euro 2024 coverage alongside stars such as Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Lineker has been critical of England’s displays in Germany, with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate and captain Harry Kane issuing their own responses to his assessments.

Some of his comments have come during his BBC duties, while he has made other remarks on the podcast he launched last August.

Lineker started The Rest is Football podcast at the beginning of last season and has used the platform to discuss the latest football news alongside Shearer and Richards.

The ex-Leicester and Barcelona player has been happy to swear on the podcast and labelled England’s performance against Denmark in their second Euro 2024 group game as “s***”.

Lineker even admitted on the podcast hours before he was due to appear in the BBC hotseat on Monday that he was feeling a “little bit croaky and a tad groggy this morning” after watching Scotland’s defeat to Hungary with Wayne Rooney the previous evening.

Some sports producers believe Lineker has become more confident about giving his own opinions during his BBC presenting duties since the podcast began, according to The Times.

And discussing the podcast, one producer told the newspaper: “It’s a lot more frank and sweary - and in that format Lineker is more able to voice his opinion. Plus I think he knows that this is his last tournament, and he doesn’t give a f***.”

Meanwhile, a BBC insider has defended the manner of the on-screen team after explaining: “We encourage all our pundits to be honest with their opinions and to be themselves, to really ensure we are talking about the topics in a way that informs and educates the audience.”

Southgate and Kane spoke about Lineker’s remarks after they were quizzed by journalists in a press conference.

And Lineker went on to take aim at the reporters as he told Shearer on his podcast: “Made the headlines again, haven't I - journalists being what journalists are.

“They can be a bit tricky on these things trying to wind up our footballers. We've been obviously critical of England's performance as has pretty much every journalist. I guarantee whoever asked that would have probably been critical himself.”
