Car crashes into special needs school as children were dropped off

A woman has been arrested for dangerous driving after a car crashed into a special needs school at drop off time this morning.

Teachers had to evacuate the affected building at the Alderman Knight School in the Ashchurch area of Tewkesbury as classes were due to begin this morning.

No injuries have been reported following the crash, but a woman in her 40s was detained by officers.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Emergency services are currently responding to a report that a vehicle has collided with a building in the Ashchurch area of Tewkesbury.

‘We were called to Alderman Knight School on Ashchurch Road shortly after 8.25am and no injuries have been reported.

‘A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving in connection with the incident.

‘The building is currently being evacuated so that any structural damage can be assessed.’

Alderman Knight is a ‘very successful and well-established special school for children aged seven to 19 with moderate and additional learning difficulties, complex needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Its website states: ‘We are fortunate to have a purpose built environment and the school buildings provide a learning environment that allows our pupils and students to access high quality facilities across the school, including specialist classrooms, a life-skills flat, a sensory room and a range of outdoor play equipment.’

Laurence Robertson, previously the Conservative MP for Tewkesbury, praised the school in Parliament in January this year.
