Over 2,000 restaurants to offer July 1 discounts

More than 2,000 food outlets and stores across Hong Kong will offer discounts to celebrate July 1, with a lawmaker stressing that the concessions are not aimed at boosting business. A 29 percent discount will apply to designated menu items under the initiative. Shops that have agreed to take part include convenience stores, and major chains like Maxim's, Cafe de Coral, and Tai Hing. "We are not doing this to increase our sales. This is part of a celebration," said catering sector lawmaker Tommy Chueng on Wednesday. "It is not how much business we do. It is contributing so that everybody will be happy come July 1 when you go out to eat." The lawmaker also said that asking eateries to give an across-the-board discount would discourage them from offering cheaper food and drink items. "It is hard to take 29 percent off your bill and be able to pay rent, your salaries and all your food costs," Cheung said. Simon Wong, chairman of the Quality Tourism Services Association, said the discounts are coming at a good time, because more mainland residents are now able to travel to the SAR through the Individual Visit Scheme.
