Prosecutors drop 2 charges vs. ex-NBA guard West

Multiple criminal cases against former NBA guard Delonte West were dismissed Tuesday after Virginia prosecutors decided to no longer pursue charges against him, according to court records reviewed by ESPN.

The cases centered on charges of felony drug possession and violation of pretrial conditions and were tied to separate arrests, the former on March 17 and the latter on June 6.

West, 40, is still due back in court July 11 on additional charges of resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, which stemmed from the June 6 arrest, when West was jailed and later released on a $2,000 bond.

In that June 6 arrest, Fairfax County police spotted West around 1 a.m. in Groveton, Virginia, and sought to serve a warrant, police said. A pursuit ensued, and officers found him unresponsive after losing sight of him during the chase. West was later released from an area hospital and transported to the Fairfax County Detention Center.

West, who publicly discussed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder during his NBA career, has dealt with substance abuse in recent years. He was treated at a Florida drug rehabilitation therapy center in 2021 and later ended up working at the facility after former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban helped him get his life back on track.

Cuban, who picked West up at a gas station in September 2020 after pictures circulated of West panhandling at an intersection in Dallas, was one of several people in the NBA who attempted to help West at the time.

West averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game over eight NBA seasons while playing for Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Mavericks. He last played in 2011-12 with Dallas.
