England fans call for Southgate to be axed mid-tournament and replaced by familiar face

England fans have urged the FA to sack Gareth Southgate immediately as opposed to waiting until after Euro 2024 to bring in a new head coach. Southgate has come under fire as a result of England's negative tactics despite the Three Lions reaching the knockout stages with a game to spare.

A number of pundits, including England icons Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, tore into Southgate's defensive approach following last week's draw with Denmark. He has often been accused of lacking the tactical nous required to excel in charge of England, leading to calls for the FA to step in.

57 per cent of respondents to our latest poll believe the FA should dismiss Southgate immediately and bring in a new face ahead of the knockout stages. Only 43 per cent said they wanted to keep Southgate until at least the end of the Euros.

When presented with a list of potential replacements, there was a clear favourite with 43 per cent of respondents voting for Jurgen Klopp. However, the former Liverpool boss is widely expected to take a year's sabbatical, meaning it is unlikely he will manage England any time soon.

Graham Potter received the second-highest number of votes, with 23 per cent of respondents wanting to see him take over the reins from Southgate. It has been widely speculated that Potter is holding out for the England job after talks with Leicester City broke down earlier this month.

Mauricio Pochettino, who parted ways with Chelsea at the end of last season, was voted as the ideal choice by 13 per cent of respondents. Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel each received nine per cent of the vote, while England under-21 boss Lee Carsley was favoured by three per cent of respondents.

Voters also urged Southgate to make an important tweak to his England side ahead of their final group stage match against Slovenia. Three in four respondents said that Trent Alexander-Arnold should be dropped from the starting XI after featuring in midfield for England's opening two games.

Meanwhile, nearly two-thirds of voters expressed a desire for Phil Foden to keep his place despite failing to impress on the left wing. The England ace usually plays through the middle for Manchester City but has been shifted out wide by Southgate, with Jude Bellingham occupying the central role.
