UEFA could ban Euro 2024 matchgoers from drinking in the stands following the most recent incident of fans throwing plastic beer cups onto the pitch.

Croatia fans were the latest at the tournament to chuck cups - which have a €3 deposit (£2.50) - towards opposition players.

Incensed by the incident, commentator Jonathan Pearce, who was covering Croatia's game against Italy for the BBC, said: "Players are experiencing plastic cups being thrown at the pitch and it's happening more and more.

"I was speaking to some Germans yesterday and they were saying they won't let it carry on. They will stop people drinking."

Express Sport has reached out to UEFA for comment.

It wouldn't be the first time tournament organisers have limited the sale of beer for England fans, with the Three Lions' first group game against Serbia having had alcohol restrictions.

Deemed a 'high-risk fixture', fans who attended the clash at the Arena AufSchalke could only purchase a weaker 2.8% beer, instead of the usual 4.8% beverage on offer at all of the other fixtures.

Fans were also only allowed to buy two beers per person - a rule exclusive to the England vs Serbia game.

Speaking ahead of the match earlier this month, Gelsenkirchen Police Chief Inspector Christof Burghardt claimed measures were taken because of England fans' reputations at major tournaments.

He told Sky News: "The English guys, with a lot of alcohol, they are sometimes very aggressive."

Violence did end up marring the build-up to that fixture, with fans clashing in the city centre ahead of kick-off.

The party moved on to Frankfurt after that, with three England supporters having been arrested prior to the game.

Should authorities look to ban the consumption of alcohol in the stands, it's likely to impact England's knockout run at the Euros.

England's final group game against Slovenia is on Tuesday night, with the Three Lions all but confirmed of a spot in the last-16.

But despite taking four points from their opening two matches, Gareth Southgate's side have come under criticism for their performances.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to drop out of the England XI for the Slovenia game, with Conor Gallagher the rumoured change.
